Press Releases
Cleveland Hopkins International Airport announced that travelers can now securely and conveniently use their mobile driver’s license, including Ohio driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet, at Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security checkpoints to verify their identity.
Cleveland Hopkins Airport joins John Glenn Columbus International Airport, Cincinnati/ Northern Kentucky International Airport, and many other airports across the country in accepting mobile driver’s licenses.
Ohio driver’s licenses and state IDs are available for Ohioans to add to Apple Wallet, which the state of Ohio adopted last year. Ohio driver’s licenses and state IDs in Apple Wallet offer a convenient and secure companion to the physical plastic card but does not replace an individual’s physical card. [1]
“We are excited that Cleveland Hopkins International Airport is joining John Glenn Columbus International Airport and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport in accepting mobile driver’s licenses, including Ohio IDs in Apple Wallet, said Ohio BMV Registrar Charlie Norman. “I’m pleased that Ohioans will have expanded opportunities to use this innovative and convenient new ID tool as part of their travel plans.”

Presenting a Mobile Ohio Driver’s License or State ID
To present an Ohio driver’s license or ID in Apple Wallet at a TSA checkpoint, residents [2] can double-click the Side Button of their device, select their driver’s license or state ID, and then hold their device near a TSA reader. Residents’ devices will then display what information is being requested, and only after authorizing with Face ID or Touch ID is the requested information released from a device. Since the information is shared digitally, users do not need to hand over their iPhone or Apple Watch to present their Ohio driver’s license or state ID in Apple Wallet.

Security & Privacy for IDs in Apple Wallet
Apple Wallet provides a convenient, secure way to add and present a driver's license or state ID using just an iPhone or Apple Watch and uses the privacy and security features that are built into an Apple device to help protect a user’s identity and personal information.
When adding an ID to Apple Wallet, the state issuing authority receives only information they need to approve or deny adding your ID to Apple Wallet.
Once added to Apple Wallet, ID information is encrypted on a user’s device, so others including Apple, cannot access it unless a user chooses to present it. Apple and the state issuing authority do not know when or to whom you present your driver’s license or state ID. A user’s presentment history is encrypted and stored only on their device, and Apple doesn't retain any presentment information that can be tied back to a user. When presenting an ID in Apple Wallet, only the information needed for the transaction is presented, and the user has the opportunity to review and authorize the information being requested before it is shared.
To use this technology, residents must have a valid and readable Ohio driver’s license or ID card, as well as an iPhone 8 or later with iOS 16.5 or later, or Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 9.5 or later.
