Stations located past security as new passenger amenity

Cleveland, April 20th, 2017 – As a part of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport’s (CLE) focus on enhancing the customer experience, CLE has begun installing new bottle filling stations on the secure side of the airport which allows travelers to take an empty bottle through the Transportation Security Administration’s (TSA) Security checkpoints and re-fill them once on the secure side.

As a part of security protocol TSA does not allow bottles of water in carry-on luggage or purses, however empty metal or plastic bottles are permitted. With the new bottle filling stations, passengers can carry the empty bottle through the checkpoint and easily re-fill the bottle with cold, filtered water.

This energy-efficient system saves a passenger from having to purchase a bottle of water inside the terminal. The green initiative also reduces the number of plastic bottles in the environment. The system actually tracks how many bottles have been saved in a digital readout on the unit. In just the first day use from the first filling station, it recorded 100 uses, or bottles saved. If this trend continues when all of the units are installed, it equates to roughly 150,000 bottles saved per year.

Passengers can re-fill their empty bottles in 4 locations: The first, which is already installed, is just inside Checkpoint A to the right of the restrooms which are straight ahead once inside the checkpoint. The remaining three will be installed by the 2nd week of May. The second location is near Gate C8 across from the new Bar Symon location. And the third and fourth locations are in each restroom in the Food Court.
